The Number of Unsolved Murders in New York City

barrells6.jpg

There are now 9,082 unsolved murders in New York City going back to 1985. That figure is a moving target of course. They are adding to that number all the time. Roughly 150 – 200 or more murders go cold every year, and try as they might, they are not going back and solving that many each year (of the older, cold cases).

That picture was take at one of the Property Clerk warehouses. Those barrels contain homicide evidence.

Attention!  If you have a friend or loved one whose murder is still unsolved and you want to know what to do, please read this:

People ask repeatedly in the comments section about what to do or who to call about an unsolved murder. The answer to those questions are on the left under the heading, Getting Help – Contacting a Cold Case Squad. First read the document titled Before You Contact a Cold Case Squad. Then look up the number in the document Cold Case Squad and Other Organizations.

If you can’t find a number for your city or town, call your local police department and ask them if they have a cold case squad or a person in their homicide squad who specializes in cold cases. If they don’t then ask to speak to someone in their homicide squad. If you don’t get what you believe is a decent response, then go to the document on the left titled, Escalating Your Case.

If you have specific questions after reading through these instructions please ask here, but come back to see the answer!

I am looking for info on a case that occurred in 2005. I remember reading (in the NY Post or NY Daily news) that they had found a female body (or more?) dumped in the Brooklyn area that had been bound in plastic yellow ribbon, like that used to secure/bind a package in a warehouse. I remember the article saying that the police suspected that the killer probably had a van and, most likely, an accomplice. I have search the net like crazy. I can’t find this case or any stories about it. If I remember correctly, this story was around late summer/fall of 2005. Is there any way you could help me find this story/article or anything about this case?

    Thanks

I’m so sorry. I was just doing some more digging and I realized that I read this when I got into New York from China (I had been living/working there). That was Late summer/Fall 2006, not 2005. I have adjusted my searches, but still, I’m having no luck. I hope you can help me. It may be tied to something bigger.

    Thanks so much.

  • 3 -Jeff // Aug 16, 2011 at 11:05 pm

sorry. My first comment seems to have been over written by my second? I was inquiring about a murder(s) that happened in late summer/fall 2006. The bodies were found with some yellow binding tape. If I remember correctly; the body was found in Brooklyn, the police thought the killer had a van and quite likely, an accomplice. I’ve been looking for this online for a whole day and can’t find anything. I read about it in the Post or one of the other local papers soon after I moved to NY from China. That was August, 2006. Thanks.

Hi, I would suggest reading this post about how to track down more information about a homicide:

  • 5 KC // Aug 26, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Dear Stacy, Just a quick question. I am wondering how one would be able to determine an “unsolved” homicide vs. a closed case. There are 2 people I would like to know about. One a friend of mine in Greenwich Village circa 1974-1975 and my dad in 1977. Thank for you any info or suggestions.

  • 6 Stacy Horn // Aug 26, 2011 at 4:21 pm

I’m so sorry about your dad and your friend. I would suggest starting by calling the precinct where the homicides occurred. The precincts and numbers are listed on the NYPD’s website.

I’m very sorry about your brother. If you look over on the left, at the very top, it says: Getting Help-Contacting a Cold Case Squad. Click on “Before You Contact a Cold Case Squad READ THIS” and read through those instructions. At the end there will be a link to phone numbers to call.

  • 12 Stacy Horn // Sep 24, 2011 at 8:01 am

If you look over on the left, at the very top, it says: Getting Help-Contacting a Cold Case Squad. Click on “Before You Contact a Cold Case Squad READ THIS” and read through those instructions. At the end there will be a link to phone numbers to call.

You need to research this a little more before contacting anyone, however. I’d start by calling other family members who might know more details. You’re going to need your cousin’s name first and foremost, the police will not be able to help you without that. Also, you don’t say if the case was unsolved. You also don’t say what you are trying to find out, and it could be that they can tell you what you would like to know.

Im truly sorry, and I see that this is something that time can’t heal, it only makes it worse.

i am the daughter of a young woman by the name of Elaine Clark that was murdered when i was 3yrs old.. i have searched and searched trying to find some kind of information about what happened to her. this happened on or around november 2, 1982. some crazy man decided that he would take my mother on a five story building rooftop in harlem on 125th e, i think that was the addrress, and kill her, at the time she was pregnant, and i was with her, he took me back down stairs and left me there. then went about two blocks down and killed my mother’s best friend, and left her son on the corner, as he did me. then killed a nun a block from her. i would like to know if this man was ever arrested and prosecuted for these crimes. i have the officers name that worked on this case, i have it written down(not with me right now) but i would appreciate it if anyone here remembers this incident that can help please do and thank you in advance.

In September of 1995-96 a friend of mine was murdered on Staten Island. Her body was found in the Grymes Hill section of Staten Island near Wagner College….Her name was Susan Dalton age 29 (aprox) several years ago I found information regarding the story. Please help me and her close friends have some closure.

  • 40 Stacy Horn // Dec 19, 2011 at 9:53 am

I think the easiest thing would be for one of you to contact her family. The police will probably not look it up for you as you are not members of the family, but her family might be glad to know that her friends are still thinking of her and still care. Maybe wait until well after Christmas though, because at the same time your contact will be a reminder that she is no longer here.

Back in either the late 70’s or early 1980’s there was a young man that was shot and killed in Ridgewood Queens, near Forest Avenue.

All that do remember is that his name was Michael. I believe this is still an unsolved murder and for reasons which I cannot disclose here and now, I have always had my suspicions about who was involved.

I am wondering if this case ever was solved?

    Thank you.

  • 46 Kimberly // Jan 28, 2012 at 1:55 am

Hi my name is Kimberly and I am 25 yrs old. My mother left when I was four and I have little to no memory of her. She was killed when I was 8yrs old but i didnt know her. Her murder goes unsolved. What do I do? Where do I get information? Who do I contact?

  • 47 Stacy Horn // Jan 28, 2012 at 7:02 pm

I’m so sorry about your mother. If you read the post you are commenting on all the answers to your questions are there. If you look over on the left, at the very top, it says: Getting Help-Contacting a Cold Case Squad. Click on “Before You Contact a Cold Case Squad READ THIS” and read through those instructions carefully. At the end of that document is a link to a list of cold case squads around the country and their phone numbers.

  • 48 Stacy Horn // Jan 28, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Well, you have some research ahead of you if you’d like to find the answer. I’d suggest reading this post, which tells you how you might begin:

    https://www.therestlesssleep.com/?p=704

Once you’ve gathered more information, you can try contacting the 104th Precinct, (718) 386-3004. If you have reason to believe the murder is unsolved, ie, you believe you know who did it and they’re walking around, then you could also contact the cold case squad, 718-834-2777.

Hey,on August 9th,@2010 one of my best friends Kelvin George Lantigua was killed on the corner of Norwood and Fulton in East New York Brooklyn..he was stabbed in the chest and cut under his arm which led to him bleeding to death in the middle of the street…the boy responsible for his murder fled with another boy in a maxima and were never pursued although a cop was present on the corner across the street..i hear rumors of who it was throughout the neighborhood and the video showed on the news only create more rumors..all im saying is how come its FEBRUARY 7TH 2012 and his killer still hasnt been caught!? the cops stop looking into the case its like they just gave up after a few days.. i feel as if they judged my best friends death because he was wearing gang beads and alot of people out there view them as the scum of the society ignorring the fact that most of these kids are just temporaryly blinded by the idea that its cool to be in a gang ..lots of these kids have a fantasy idea of the gang life where they think nothing bads gonna happens ..its just a few fights here and there but at least ill have my fellow gang brothers..anyways all im saying is i wanna know what is being done to find his killer

  • 50 Stacy Horn // Feb 8, 2012 at 3:19 pm

I’m very sorry you lost your best friend in this way. Have you been in touch with his family? Do you know what actually was or wasn’t done and why? If not, you might want to contact them to find out where the case stands. They might like to hear from people who still care.
